A good name for the "Jam" would be "Estimated Approximated."

How cool would it have been outside the band's inner circle and to have heard this sound check.
And you can be sure folks even in early 74 would have been like yeah right-sure.
So somebody out there all these years later can say:
I told you so --on 2/22/74 THEY SOUND CHECKED== ATTICS of my LIFE!!!
I did not really pick up on Donna on anything but IMHBTR but agreed this is NOT the best use of Donna Jean's great voice. I am sure looking back on this she would concur.

The "jam" at the end is clearly faded in and does not segue from this version of Must Have Been the Roses. It also sounds very different from the other "checks".

Re: Donna's backing vocals on Roses, I agree that they leave much to be desired. She's singing out of her range and it's a bit odd that the Dead went with this troublesome arrangement for a decent part of 1974. Sometime after Missoula (a version which makes this one sound relatively normal!) but before Europe and the Farewell Shows the band switched to the much preferred arrangement where she sings in a lower register and they stuck with it ever after (well, at least for the duration of the Donna years). I agree that this might be a proto-Estimated Prophet experiment as it is in 7/4 time. Or that is my own noodle screwed up.

Just because Kimmock played since the 70's doesn't change the fact that everytime I see him all he plays is "Jerry riffs". I'm a professional jazz guitarist and have played for 35 years. I've seen Jerry 200+ times and Kimmock many times and know what I'm talking about. Just because you don't like what I said doesn't mean it isn't true.

... dude, you calling kimock a Jerry Clone is rediculous. He was one of Jerry's favorite guitar players, for fucks sake. He'd been in his own bands since the late 70's and your calling him a clone?? some freagn nerve... there is a great difference between a clone and someone who is heavily influenced by his playing. That Jam is the inception of esitmated prophet. HELL YEAH!!

I believe I may have heard this somewhere before, though I'm not sure. The TLEO is a complete version & it's REALLY GOOD IMO! Previous reviewer said this is what Jerry's voice should sound like---I agree. It's nice to hear them without the crowd behind them---or in front of them actually. And the JAM does have that Estimated Prophet bridge sound to it. I guess just as Slipknot came up in jams throughout '74, this one did too.

No star rating, but it's WELLLLL worth the listen.

After giving this a listen, the unknown Jam is assuredly the bridge section for the yet-to-be-debuted Estimated Profit. All of this is worth a listen.

fine noodling without the 'stress' of being the highly acclaimed virtuoses. relaxed bay-area feeling. nice, but - as all soundchex - not the 'real stuff'. donna's harmonies are cruel, imo. jerry sings as you want to hear him all the time ;-) , his guitar reminds you of steve kimock, but 20 years earlier. banter bits let one smile... all of this material is good for underlaying the 'small wee hour in the morning', between waking up and bring-the-child-to-the-kindergarten-and-move-to-workplace.
